The best date depends on what you want to do: for stargazing, look for a departure close to the new moon; to walk the dunes at sunset and enjoy a moonlit landscape, choose Dunas con la Luna. Then check the season and the effort each route involves. A good date for photographing the sky does not necessarily allow the same hike as a winter departure.
This guide describes the Pinacate Tours experiences. Availability is in our departure calendar; operating conditions may change with the weather or the reserve’s instructions.
Which tour to choose for what you want to see

What changes during the year
For the dune hike on Noche de Estrellas, these are our operating rules:

This does not mean both experiences follow the same route. Dunas con la Luna walks in the afternoon, and its trail is used from September to May. Check the dates actually published for that tour.
Winter nights call for warm clothes. The historical temperatures on each departure page are a reference, not a forecast. Before you travel, the team shares the expected conditions and instructions for that date. Do not choose your sleeping gear by the midday temperature alone.
New moon or full moon: the difference you will notice
With little moonlight, faint stars and the band of the Milky Way stand out better. With a full moon, the landscape gains light and contrast, but the galaxy becomes much harder to make out. NASA explains how light and sky conditions affect observing in its skywatching guide.
The moon phase alone is not enough: the time the Moon rises, the clouds and what you want to observe also matter. Each departure page shows information about the night to help you compare.
If your main reason for coming is to photograph the centre of the galaxy, see when the Milky Way is visible in El Pinacate. In winter you can have a starry sky and still not find the same scene you see in a summer photograph.
Is it worth booking during a meteor shower?
It can be a good choice if it coincides with a departure and the night’s conditions help. See the departures scheduled at the peak of a meteor shower. There you can check the matches without relying on a list of dates copied into several articles.
The peak does not guarantee a number of meteors or a clear sky. Also compare the moonlight and the observing times for that departure.
If you are coming from elsewhere
The main departure is from Hermosillo at 6:00 AM. If you are flying in, plan to be in Hermosillo the night before and confirm your return logistics with the team before buying flights. Sonora Salvaje picks up in Hermosillo only; Noche de Estrellas and Dunas con la Luna have other pick-up points, listed on their pages.
